Frasers Ridge Outlander Locations Boone Blowing Rock

Frasers Ridge Outlander Locations Boone Blowing Rock

The Outlander series of historical fantasy novels has brought a new type of visitor to the North Carolina High Country! Here is a list of locations to visit that are inspired by the book series.

  • The Blowing Rock (not the village but the actual attraction - resembles the rock Jamie & Claire stood on for photo shoot for Season 4; also the Cherokee legend there ties in nicely with Season 4/Book 4)

  • Rough Ridge Trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 302.8 (the trail goes through a “rhododendron hell” as mentioned in Book 4; also the rock jut outs resemble the rock that Jamie & Claire stood on for photo for Season 4)

  • Fort Defiance, Lenoir NC (home of General William Lenoir who fought with the Overmountain Men - may be in Book 9 which hasn’t been published yet)

  • Horn In The West, Boone (this drama tells the story of the Regulators who are in Book 5)

  • Brinegar Cabin on the Parkway Milepost 238.5 (Caroline Brinegar, would have been a kindred spirit of Claire’s - just in a different century)

  • Wilkes Heritage Museum (includes the home of Captain Robert Cleveland who fought in the Revolutionary War/King’s Mountain - may be in Book 9 which hasn’t been published yet) and a statue of Colonel Benjamin Cleveland

  • Stone Mountain and the 19th century Hutchinson homestead (Wilkes/Alleghany County)

  • Thompkins Knob Trail (Milepost 272.5) A half-mile trail will lead you to Jesse Brown Cabin. The cabin was built in the late 1800s and sits beneath a large red maple tree. Built as a residence for local preachers, the cabin is known for its sharp inclined roof. Also, located beside the cabin is the old Cool Spring Baptist Church building. Because both were built in the 19th century, they would give folks an idea of the rustic nature of homes and buildings in the backcountry.

  • The Orchard at Altapass on the Parkway Milepost 328.3  (Overmountain Victory Trail goes through the Orchard. The Overmountain Men will be featured in Book 9 which has not been released yet. Also, they can walk the trail to the grave of Charlie McKinney who was from Scotland and had 4 wives and 48 children. Go on the hayride to hear the story of old Charlie!)

  • Leatherwood Mountain Resort, Ferguson, NC. This is where Fraser’s Ridge Homecoming, the Outlander inspired event for history fans, is held. Step inside the office and ask for a map of the property.  Take a ride up the mountain to see what Fraser’s Ridge might have looked like.

*A special thank you to Beth P. of Outlander North Carolina for providing this list of landmarks to the High Country Regional Visitor Center.  Feel free to stop by for a paper copy of this list and help mapping out your tour!
