The NC High Country is a popular viewing area for hawk migrations due to the rocky outcroppings and mountain ridgelines that provide optimal wind currents for the hawks to ride as they head south for the winter.The migration for the broad-winged hawks takes place around the middle of September, with smaller hawks migrating into October. Here is a list of the best migration viewing areas in the High Country:

Mahogany Rock- Sparta, NC
LOCATION: Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 235

This overlook has a large space for setting up chairs and a large parking area, as well as long range views of the north, northwest and south, with an elevation of 3343 feet. Viewing tends to be at their greatest around the third week of September, but you can spot hawks from August 15 to November 30. For an up-to-date sighting listing, Click HERE

 

Grandfather Mountain- Linville, NC
LOCATION: 2050 Blowing Rock Highway, Linville, NC 28646

Hawk viewing at Grandfather Mountain takes place at Linville Peak, an official hawk count site. With a 5,308 foot elevation, the peak features nearly 360 degree views. The site is easily accessible from a parking area at the top of the mountain.  From September 1- 20, during hawk migration season, you will find Grandfather Mountain naturalists on hand at the viewing area.
