NC Mountains Firefly Viewing

NC Mountains Firefly Viewing

There are plenty of places to view fireflies, from along country roads around Boone, West Jefferson, Sparta and Wilkesboro and in park fields, to special events (like Grandfather Mountain).  Fireflies usually can be seen for about 20 days out of the year in the NC High Country.  When the fireflies first show up varies based on the spring/ summer weather, but you can usually find them at dusk/dark mid-June- early July.  Here are some popular ways to view fireflies:

  • SUMMER MUSIC IN THE PARK SERIES
Most public parks close at dusk, leaving you little time to view fireflies.  BUT- when holding summer concerts, the parks allow visitors to linger longer as the music plays into the nightfall.  The Music in the Valle series at Valle Crucis Park, and the Concerts in the Park series in Banner Elk are our top picks for firefly viewing.  You can find a full list of free summer music events HERE

  • CAMP OUT
Camping out is a sure way to catch some fireflies. From state and federal to privately ran campgrounds with unique lodging (think cabins, teepees and yurts!) there is a way to "get out" at your comfort level.  View campgrounds HERE

  • GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN
Research on Grandfather Mountain has confirmed the presence of 10 species of fireflies or illumining insects, including Photinus carolinus, Blue Ghost fireflies, and Glowworms. In June and July, the attraction hosts "Grandfather Glows," a special nighttime viewing event with limited tickets.

  • COUNTRY DRIVE
Hit the road after dinner and meander through the countryside.  You will probably see fireflies dancing over the fields and along the tree covered backroads. Pull off and enjoy the show!  View our favorite backroad routes HERE
