BEST WAYS TO START THE NEW YEAR

• New Year's Day Sunrise
  Where: Grandfather Mountain, Linville
  Ring in an epic New Year on Saturday, Jan. 1, for the first sunrise of 2026 — atop Grandfather Mountain.This special event will allow guests the rare opportunity to visit Grandfather Mountain outside of regular operating hours and on a holiday.

• First Day Hike
  Where: Rendezvous Mountain State Park, Purlear
  At 9:30am, you can meet at the park office, (two story cabin building) for a Ranger led 4 mile hike through the mountains mixed hardwood forest.  We will be hiking by the Amadahy waterfall and continuing the loop back to the office.  This trail has steep terrain with roots and exposed rocks so please wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for a strenuous hike.  Please bring water and a snack for this hike.

• First Day Hike
  Where: Stone Mountain State Park, Roaring Gap
  At 10am, join a Ranger while we hike roughly 3 miles around Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock trails starting at the Lower Trailhead Parking Lot. Bring water and a snack as we will have some time to enjoy two different overlook views during the hike. 

• First Day Hike
  Where: Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, West Jefferson
  At 10:30am, we will be meeting at the Mount Jefferson Picnic Shelter for 1.4 mile hike to the Luther Rock Overlook. Please dress for cold weather and wear proper shoes. Snow/ice will cancel this program. 

• First Day Hike
  Where: Buckeye Recreation Center, Beech Mountain
  At 10am, We will be tackling the Falls Trail. If you've never seen the falls in wintertime, you're in for a treat! This does raise the difficulty if it snows, and we encourage hiking poles. For more information, reach out to Matt at 828-387-3003.
