Halloween celebrations begin a bit early at the App with the October 28 screening of Beetlejuice, the 1988 Academy Award winning film directed by Tim Burton and starring
Michael Keaton, Alex Baldwin, Geena Davis and Winona Rider. It’s a wildly creative and campy film about a happy couple with a lovely country house who die in a car accident and must haunt their old home while waiting to be processed into heaven. Too nice to be scary, they befriend the new tenant's daughter. When they fail to prevent the girl's parents from ruining the house, they ask a devilish spirit for help.

As young boys, Christopher and Taylor Malpass soaked up the music of their granddad’s phonograph records. Christopher earned his first talent show trophy at age 7, and Taylor was playing mandolin by the time he was 10. Today, they promote the work and music of classic country artists they treasure while creating new music and making their own mark in the lineage of a rich American cultural heritage.

Selections from MYTHS AND HYMNS by Adam Guettel
Many of these songs are adapted from Greek myths and from lyrics I found in an old hymnal in a used bookshop. I used these dissimilar cosmologies as points of departure and discovered as I went along that they have a lot in common - a desire to transcend earthly bounds, to bond with something or someone greater. They seem to complement each other, reflecting different parts of us: the myths, our behaviors; the hymns, our prayers. —Adam Guettel, New York City 1999
As a facet of Appalachian Opera Theatre, the Opera Workshop course at the Hayes School of Music will present Selections from Myths and Hymns by Adam Guettel. Opera Workshop is made up of non-auditioned performers eager to share their talent on the stage. Included in the cast are nineteen singers, a piano, violin, guitar, and percussion who will perform, in English, solos and ensembles that possess the styles and influences of jazz, modern classical, and contemporary pop.
As mentioned in the above quote, the songs are based on texts from mythological stories and lyrics from a hymnal which compliment each other not only in the general theme of a desire to transcend earthly bounds, but also in more specific themes that arise from the mythological stories. The songs are performed with minimal staging in a pseudo-cabaret style setting.

Yonder Mountain String Band has redefined bluegrass music, expanding the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by steadily pushing the envelope into the realms of rock n’ roll and improvisation. We all know that Santa covers the whole world delivering presents to good children in just one night, but have you ever stopped and asked yourself how? Santa has long used gravitational vortexes just like ours at Mystery Hill to warp himself from place to place! However this year some mischievous elves have messed with Santa’s vortex generator, setting it off early! Now elves are scattered all over our mysterious hillside. Bring your family to help rescue these stranded elves to save Christmas!

Fans of old-time music, we have good news for you! Erynn Marshall and Carl Jones will play an Indoor Concert at the Jones House this fall. A couple who calls the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia home, Marshall and Jones have amassed numerous awards for their fiddle playing and fingerpick guitar, respectively. Married in life and in music, they are known for their artful musicianship, their impactful songwriting, and their on-stage repartee and charisma.
