Pre-film talk with Dr. John Pfeifer begins at 7pm, with the film beginning at approximately 7:30pm. In German and Russian with English subtitles Never Look Away is an epic historical drama which follows thirty years in the life of German artist, Kurt Barnert - loosely based on the real life story of Gerhard Richter, one of the twentieth century’s most admired visual artists. Spanning three decades of German history, the film explores Kurt’s quest for individual artistic freedom. As a child, Kurt is forced to stifle his creativity to adhere to rigid Nazi ideology which views art as nothing more than a vessel to propagate its ideology. His art education in the communistic, Russian controlled regime of the GDR adheres to the same repressive dogma. As a young art student, Kurt falls in love with fellow student, Ellie Seeband. Ellie’s father, Professor Seeband, a famous doctor, is dismayed at his daughter’s choice of boyfriend, and vows to destroy the relationship. What neither of them knows is that their lives are already connected through a terrible crime Dr. Seeband committed decades ago. “The title of Never Look Away is deliciously ironic: This is one of the most mesmerizing, compulsively watchable films in theaters right now. Written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck — best known for his masterful 2006 drama The Lives of Others — this meditation on art, memory and meaning is yet another deep-dive into the postwar psyche of the filmmaker’s native Germany. " -Washington Post “Never Look Away is wrapped up in touching performances, beautiful cinematography, and an incredibly faithful timepiece that reminds us to never look away because 'everything that's true is beautiful’.” -Daze "Never Look Away is an epic, intergenerational tale of art, love, tragedy and politics.” -Variety “A feast of Fine Acting and Magnificent Visuals.” -Film Journal International Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmark Starring
