Blue Ridge Music Trails North Carolina
Blue Ridge Music Trails North Carolina
One of the most distinctive cultural icons of the High Country is “our” music. Mountain music includes elements of old English ballads, Irish and Scottish Gaelic dance music, African instrumentation and rhythms, gospel, and quite a bit of original mountain hardscrabble life experience. Distinctive types of mountain music range from “roots” music to the more polished bluegrass and modern Gaelic styles. Residents continue a musical heritage that stretches back many generations. Performances, some rehearsed, some spontaneous, are almost always easily accessible throughout the High Country.
The North Carolina Arts Council, in association with the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and noted folklorist Fred Fussell, have created the guidebook “Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina” that puts readers on the trail to discover the many sites in western North Carolina where unique musical legacy’s thrive.
