NC High Country Rainy Day Activities:
Expecting snow or sunshine but the rainy weather got you down? We’ve got you covered! There are plenty of activities that you can only do in the NC High Country to fill your time so that none of it goes to waste.


  • Museums & Galleries: Visit the Appalachian Heritage Museum, which was started as a labor of love for the history of the Appalachian Mountains, and the Native American Artifacts Museum, which has a remarkable collection of over 50,000 Native American artifacts collected from 23 different states. Both attractions are located at Mystery Hill.  The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University host rotating art & craft exhibits. The Alta Vista Gallery in Valle Crucis represents over 100 artists in a historic location.
  • Shopping: Visit some of the truly “unique to the area” shops of the NC High Country.  The Original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis is a great place to stop and play checkers with a 5 cent cup of coffee.  Visit the High Country Down Comforter’s factory store, DeWoolfson Down,  and take home some amazing bedding. 

  • Gem Mining: Indoor mines (with heated flumes) are available at Foggy Mountain Gem Mine  and Doc’s Rocks.  Have your discoveries polished and set while you are at the mine and take home a truly special souvenir.  


  • Dine Out: There is an abundance of options for dining out in Boone.  View a list of unique restaurants HERE.
  • Mystery Hill: Visit Mystery Hill for fun for the whole family! This unique entertainment center has five attractions under one roof including the original Mystery Platform, the Mystery House, the Hall of Mystery, the Native American Artifacts Museum and the Appalachian Heritage Museum.

NC High Country Rainy Day Activities

  • Art: Visit Crossnore School Weaving Room and watch the Appalachian art of hand-weaving. While you are there, cross the street to view the Ben Long Frescoe.  Visit the Carlton Gallery which is one of the most established Fine Art galleries in the High Country featuring artwork in all mediums with over 200 artists.
  • Caverns: The only show caverns available in North Carolina are the Linville Caverns.  The caverns are a consistent 52 degrees and offer guided tours of the unique features found inside.
  • Gems:  Visit the Museum of N.C. Minerals located on the Blue Ridge Parkway which showcases over 300 varieties of minerals and gems.  Gem Mountain Gemstone Mine on Hwy 226 in Spruce Pine has been featured on TLC and Travel Channel with the stunning gems discovered there.  Emerald Village in Little Switzerland lets you go into the historic Bon Ami Mine, general store and more to view the equipment that was used when the mine was in operation.
