Hike into the New Year at NC State Parks

Hike into the New Year at NC State Parks! To celebrate the 100th anniversary of North Carolina State Parks, many High Country NC State Parks will be hosting New Year’s Day hikes.  This is a great way to start a New Year’s Day tradition- for a healthy outlook to the future.  Here is a list of hikes happening in the Boone, Blowing Rock, West Jefferson and Wilkesboro NC area:

  • Elk Knob State Park
    With the help of local artists and students from ASU, we will have art posted in natural settings along the one mile, easy-to-walk Beech Tree Trail. This is a great family hike and should not take more than 45 minutes. Please dress appropriately for the weather and note that the temperature can be 10 degrees colder than the surrounding area. This is a 100th Anniversary Event for NC State Parks. For more information, please call 828-297-7261.

  • Grandfather Mountain State Park
    Join one of our rangers for our park’s First Day Hike of 2016. Hikers will meet at the gravel parking lot on Holloway Mountain Road, 1 mile north of the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance ramp (Parking area is located on the gravel portion of Holloway Mtn. Road). Hikers will hike 45 minutes out and 45 minutes back on the Tanawha Trail. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions. For icy conditions, bring ice traction for shoes if you have them. Please bring water and a snack. Call the park office by 11:30am if the weather is questionable, or if you have any questions: 828.963.9522.
    Appropriate for all ages – children under 16 must be accompanied by adult. Please no pets.

  • Mount Jefferson State Park
    Join us as we take a chronological journey through time and space stopping occasionally to discuss the pivotal points in North Carolina State Parks chronological history. In honor of the hundred year anniversary, we will hike through the years remembering some of the stories of these wild and wonderful public lands.

  • New River State Park
    Celebrate 100 years of State Parks and start the New Year with some fresh air! Join one of the many “first hikes” in a beautiful North Carolina State Park. Join a park ranger for an informal hike down the Hickory Trail. We will begin at the Park’s Visitor Center and return there for a 1.5 mile hike to the river and back. Wear Sturdy shoes and bring water.

  • Stone Mountain State Park
    Come celebrate another “First Day Hike” at Stone Mountain State Park. Meet a ranger for a 3.4 out-and-back moderate to strenuous hike to the top of Stone Mountain. Meet at the Upper Trail Head Parking Area.
