This event is guaranteed to be fun and engaging for the whole family. Sponsored by: The Center for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University and Joe Shannon’s Mountain Home Music About the Artist A seventh-generation ballad singer, storyteller, and musician, Sheila Kay Adams was born and raised in the Sodom Laurel community of Madison County, North Carolina, an area renowned for its unbroken tradition of unaccompanied ballad singing that dates back to the early Scots/Irish and English settlers in the mid-17th century. She learned to sing from her great-aunt Dellie Chandler Norton and other notable singers in the community, such as Dillard Chandler and the Wallin family. In addition to ballad singing, she is an accomplished clawhammer-style banjo player and storyteller. Adams began performing in public in her teens, and throughout her career she has performed at festivals, events, music camps, and workshops around the region, country, Canada and the U.K., including the acclaimed International Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and the 1976 and 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival as part of The Bicentennial Celebration and Appalachia: Heritage and Harmony. Adams is the author of two books: Come Go Home With Me, a collection of stories published by the University of North Carolina Press and a 1997 winner of the North Carolina Historical Societyʼs award for historical fiction; and My Old True Love, a novel published by Algonquin Books in 2004 and a finalist for the Independent Booksellers Association award. She has recorded several albums of ballads, songs and stories including My Dearest Dear (2000), All the Other Fine Things (2004), and Live at the Internat

Why not ask the curator! If you, like so many, have been curious to hear from a true expert, here is your chance! Due to high demand for expanded hours, BRAHM will now be open later on Thursdays until 7PM. About the Speaker: Having joined BRAHM in the spring of 2021, Gabe has returned home to Appalachia after a decade of studying and working in the Midwest. A curator, art historian, and arts administrator, he received a BA in Art History and Cultural History from Vermont’s Marlboro College before completing his graduate study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and holds an MA in Modern & Contemporary Art History, Theory, & Criticism and an MA in Arts Administration & Policy. About the Exhibit: Coast to Coast draws connections across impressionist painting as it was practiced on opposite sides of America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focussing on the artists who made the journey—some permanently and some temporarily—and how the relationships that emerged between them led to a dynamic and often divergent approach to plein-air painting. Questions of style, training, the commercial market, and even the physical landscape itself emerge as a network of conditions that encouraged a vibrant departure from East Coast impressionism. This exhibition will include works by Maurice Braun, Alson S. Clark, Elliott Daingerfield, Childe Hassam, Jane Peterson, William Merritt Post, Hanson Putthuf, Jack Wilkinson Smith, and many others."

Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach, among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James' quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. The dangerous voyage is a success, but the adventure takes a whole new twist once they land on the Empire State Building.

The husband-and-wife duo of Sarah and Austin McCombie favors rustic, minimalist acoustic arrangements—mainly clawhammer-style banjo and guitar that showcase deftness and maturity with their songwriting. The duo has a way of connecting with their audiences that is warm and universal. Chatham Rabbits’ first album All I Want From You (2019) was recorded with the help of Watchhouse’s Andrew Marlin, and their sophomore album, The Yoke is Easy, The Burden is Full, released May 1, 2020. Their song “Oxen” was named one of the “Top Folk Songs of 2020" by Paste Magazine and the band has been covered by Garden & Gun Magazine, American Songwriter, and No Depression. Their ingenuity during the Covid-19 crisis led to the building of their own venue, The Burrow, and the creation of their mobile concert experience, The Stay at Home Tour which took Chatham Rabbits to 194 neighborhoods in 2020-21. The duo is currently filming a new television show for PBS NC, On the Road with Chatham Rabbits for PBS NC that will premiere in Spring 2022.

It calls out all of humanity on many fronts such as climate change, loss of habitat, exploitation and captivity of animals, food production and processing, ineffectiveness of global summits, and the increased brutality of war. Inspired by world literary classics ranging from Aesop’s Fables to Zhuangzi’s collections of anecdotes, the play, written by one of the “world’s most respected dramatists” (PEN World Voices Festival), showcases magical and fascinating tales of the human race hurtling towards a surreal apocalypse in the company of a combative duck, an intelligent polar bear, and an incredible panda, not to mention a fun-loving genetically modified chicken. This will be the play’s world premiere in an English-language production.

L.A. Theatre Works — Lucy Loves Desi: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Sitcom tells the hilariously true behind-the-scenes story of I Love Lucy. Playwright Gregg Oppenheimer – son of the show’s creator, Jess Oppenheimer – spins this witty tale of Lucy and Desi’s battles with CBS, from who would play Lucy’s husband to whether Lucy could really be seen pregnant on TV. With their daughter, Lucie Arnaz, serving as advisor, Oppenheimer’s comedy brings as much heart and humor to the stage as an episode of I Love Lucy itself.
