With legends like George Jones, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked- Who is going to fill their shoes? The answer, in part, is Marty Stuart. The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and musician is living, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters, from Cash to Lester Flatt, and continues to record and release keenly relevant music that honors country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future.

The orchestra began when a small group of musicians dreamed of having a civic orchestra in 1946. Through the decades the musical enrichment included classical concerts, entertaining pops and light musical offerings, captivating soloists, and empowering opportunities for young musicians. In the 80’s and 90’s the orchestra grew steadily and increased its outreach. The orchestra has become a fully-professional orchestra. Today the orchestra consists of more than 70 professional musicians and is conducted by Cornelia Laemmli Orth.

We will be joined by the artist, Cantey Tanner. She will tell us about her inspiration for becoming a sculptor - primarily her grandmother and namesake who was an artist, philanthropist, and community activist in Raleigh. Cantey will illustrate the process of sculpting and casting ‘Jessie’. 'Jessie' has a twin sister who lives at the Raleigh Rose Garden and Shelley Crisp will tell us the history of the Raleigh Rose Garden, a garden created as a showcase for the citizens of North Carolina to visit in the capital city. About the Speakers: **Cantey Tanner** is a summer resident of Blowing Rock, currently serving on the Board of Governors of BRAHM and the Advisory Board of Raleigh Little Theatre. She recently retired from a 30-year career as a portrait sculptor and teacher, creating commissioned portraits of small to life-sized sculptures, primarily of children. Her work is in private collections and galleries along the East Coast. In 2011 she created a life-size sculpture named ‘Jessie’ for the town of Blowing Rock in honor of her late aunt Grace Carr. It has been embraced by the community and has become one of the most photographed features of downtown Blowing Rock. **Shelley Crisp** is a native North Carolinian who converted a passion for literature into a professional commitment to education and the humanities. A docent at the North Carolina Museum of Art since 2010, Crisp has served on the boards of the FRANK in Orange County, the Raleigh Little Theatre, and the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County. She was a Yonahlossee camper, inspired by those experiences to sustain a lifelong connection to Blowing Rock and the Appalachian Mountains.

Have you heard of the TONY awards? Well, Broadway’s Next Hit Musical is…The PHONY Awards! The audience members write down made up song titles and our master improvisers gather these suggestions and present them as “nominated songs” for this coveted award. We create spontaneous scenes and songs filled with great dancing, catchy melodies, and tons of laughter. The audience votes for their favorite song and watches as the cast turns that song into a full blown improvised musical – complete with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and plot twists galore. BNHM has been seen recently throughout the United States and in New York City at The Triad Theater, The Tribeca Film Festival, and at The New York Musical Theater Festival, among many other locations.

They’ll lead us through a few examples of lives well-lived in the service of others, followed by light refreshments. At AARP, we believe that no one's possibilities should be limited by age, and that experience has value. Older adults are energized by contributing to their communities as caregivers, volunteers and philanthropists. They are leaders in our communities, supporters of our churches and synagogues, helping hands to our neighbors and friends. Come enjoy photos and stories of people like you! Selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title, the book has been described by reviewers as “a stunning reinterpretation of the Civil War” and “one of the most original and anticipated [books] of the past decade.” In addition to talking about their research, Browning and Silver offer a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how new history gets written and the ways in which scholars from different fields work together to shed new light on familiar events. Browning and Silver are members of App State’s Department of History. Browning holds a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and teaches military history. Silver, a professor emeritus, holds a Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary and specializes in environmental history. They view their research as integral to their work with App State students. The pair treat the Civil War not just as a military conflict, but as an ecological event, one that had profound implications for the natural world. Soldiers from rural areas crowded together in training camps, creating new environments for measles, dysentery, typhoid, and a host of other diseases. Armies larger than most American cities confronted each other on the battlefield, bringing to rural areas all the problems of sanitation and waste disposal associated with urban life. Thousands of animals accompanied the troops — horses and mules that moved men, artillery, and supplies, as well as cattle and hogs that provided food for soldiers. Animals and people killed in battle had had to be disposed of, sometimes on a massive scale. Peculiarities of weather and terrain often dictated what armies could do and the armies, in turn, altered the terrain they occupied. The Civil War left a long environmental legacy, contributing to better weathe

She awakens to see a man standing in front of her wearing an industrial apron, with a cabinet full of chemicals and surgical instruments behind him. We don't want to say anything more for fear of giving too much away, but don’t be put off by the subject matter. It is, in fact, a delightfully different kind of "suspense-thriller." It's a fantastic twist on a nightmare scenario that explores human nature and relationships in an oddly entertaining way.

It is being offered free of charge to the general public. Six family-friendly movie classics will be screened over the summer months on select Saturday mornings between June 18 and August 27 beginning at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a tour of the newly-renovated and restored 1938 vaudeville theatre and cinema. Dumbo is a 1941 American animated fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions. The main character is Jumbo Jr., an elephant who is cruelly nicknamed Dumbo, as in dumb. He is ridiculed for his big ears, but in fact he is capable of flying by using his ears as wings. Throughout most of the film, his only true friend, aside from his mother, is the mouse, Timothy – a relationship parodying the stereotypical animosity between mice and elephants. At 64 minutes, it is one of Disney's shortest animated features and is considered to be among the greatest animated films of all time. The film will be screened at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 16.
