This storytelling speech celebrates the resilience of the human spirit, the power of empathy, the strength of imagination, and hope. Theatre faculty Dr. Paulette Marty will moderate the live event, which is free but advance registration is required at https://theschaefercenter.org/event/an-evening-with-anna-deavere-smith/. A FREE ONLINE EVENT.
Tommy Nichols, founder of the Charlotte Black Film Festival, leads a discussion with director, George King and the artist, Lonnie Holley immediately following the screening of the film.
SYNOPSIS
Thumbs Up for Mother Universe: Stories from the Life of Lonnie Holley is a 95-minute documentary film about the life and work of Alabama visual artist and musician Lonnie Holley. This story of survival, endurance and triumph has much to say about race and social class in the American South. Lonnie Holley’s remarkable life and the improbability of his success are an inspiration. But the pain of the memory of many of these stories remain with him to this day. As he says in the film, “My art was the salve for a lot of those memories.â€
Over the 22-year course of filming Lonnie Holley, we have shot and acquired an archive of interviews, still photographs, scenes with Holley’s family, and footage of Holley collecting materials, and making art and music. It is a unique record of an artist’s life and work. The feature length film, Thumbs Up for Mother Universe: Stories from the Life of Lonnie Holley is really, the tip of the iceberg. We see the film as an introduction to a cornucopia of materials on this website. Here viewers can go deeper–reviewing uncut interviews, photo galleries of Holley’s art, unreleased cuts of music recorded at live performances, short films created for the website, and stories that we simply could not get into the film.
Lonnie Holley is particularly interested in encouraging the creativity of young people. Beyond the possibilities of festivals, TV, and streaming video, we intend to screen the film—with accompanying workshops with Holley, in community venues to reach this audience.

Journalists flocked to the region to extract sympathetic profiles of families devastated by poverty, abandoned by establishment politics, and eager to consume cheap campaign promises. What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America's recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The book analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The book offers a must-needed insider's perspective on the region.

As one of the world’s most popular herbal remedies, ginseng is revered in China, where its roots have been consumed for its purported immune-system enhancing and energy-boosting qualities for millenia. While large scale plantations of shade-cultivated ginseng are grown in Wisconsin and Ontario for export to Asia, the cryptic, shade-loving plant grows naturally in the rich mountain forests of western North Carolina. Each fall, locals hit the woods in search of the plant to dig its unique root, which can fetch up to $1,000 per pound. Overharvest and poaching are now threatening this native plant and the traditions that many in the region hold dear. In his presentation, “Roots in Appalachiaâ€, Dr. Jim Hamilton will discuss the significance of ginseng to western North Carolina, its role in local and global markets, and other cultural nuances of ‘seng.
