FADE is an annual dance concert comprised of original works in the modern dance genre showcasing a
wide variety of dance styles and themes, with each piece created by a different choreographer. “There
are eight dances, so you are going to like at least one of them,†says Associate Professor of Dance
Studies, Susan Lutz, faculty coordinator for the ensemble. The pieces are “very eclectic, but accessible,â€
she states. Lutz is one of two faculty choreographers, alongside Professor of Dance Studies Marianne
Adams.
This year’s FADE offers a well-rounded program of dance and features a new work by guest artist
Maree ReMalia. Born in South Korea and raised in the American Midwest, ReMalia is a freelance
choreographer, performer, teaching artist, and certified Gaga instructor. During her residency on
university campus, she is creating a piece on dance students that includes exploration of movement,
sound, text, and object manipulation.
Senior Dance Studies majors Rachel Bohannon from Wake Forest and Daisy Hodge from Chapel Hill,

Please bring friends and come celebrate with us on Saturday, Nov. 24, at our Annual Christmas Open House, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The gallery will be decorated for Christmas, and we'll have refreshments, including homemade sausage balls and Christmas cookies, wines, hot cider, and other goodies. This is our way of saying THANK YOU for letting us serve you for 28 years!
The gallery will be showing a variety of canvas sizes, ranging from 30 x 40 inches down to 6 by 6 inches, small enough to sit on a tabletop easel or inside bookshelves -- small sizes to give as GIFTS!
Other GIFT IDEAS include: Locally made stained glass by Julie Neal; Mangum and New Day Pottery; Motawi craftsman-style fine art clay tiles; art prints, puzzles, notecards and Christmas cards by acclaimed folk artist Will Moses, heir to Grandma Moses; and He Gave Me Barn Cats, the debut novel of the gallery owner. (www.MariaSantomassoHyde.com)
View images of paintings on the gallery's page on Facebook and at www.altavistagallery.com. For info, call the gallery at (828) 963-5247.
“The open house falls on the same day as Small Business Saturday, which celebrates local shops that offer unique items not in the ‘Big Box’ stores―the kind of shops where you’re greeted by the owner, who often knows your name… and Alta Vista Gallery embodies all of this,†says owner Maria Santomasso-Hyde.
Alta Vista Gallery is located only 10 minutes from Boone or Banner Elk, N.C., in a National Register historic farmhouse at 2839 Broadstone Road, Valle Crucis -- between Mast Farm Inn and Mast Store Annex. For a map and directions, visit www.altavistagallery.com.
Alta Vista Gallery shows over 100 artists in all media, specializing in landscapes.

The holiday concert features Laurelyn Dossett, April Verch, Joe Newberry and Mike Compton. With inspiring vocal harmonies and virtuoso instrumentals, The Gathering breathes new life into traditional Christmas music and introduces fresh new songs of the season.
"It's what the holidays were before shopping and Irving Berlin." Wall Street Journal
About the band:
Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing, Joe Newberry is also a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter. A longtime and frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, he sang with the 2016 Transatlantic Sessions, and at the Transatlantic Session's debut at Merlefest in 2017. The Gibson Brothers' version of his song "Singing As We Rise" won the 2012 IBMA "Gospel Recorded Performance" Award, and he shared the 2013 IBMA "Song of the Year" Award for "They Called It Music" with Eric Gibson.
While April Verch is perhaps best known for playing fiddle styles from her native Ottawa Valley, Canada, her performances extend into old-time American, classic country, Scandinavian styles and beyond, for a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds. While her fiddle playing is of the "astounding" variety, it's her multiple artistic talents that allow her to come at her audiences from so many different directions and points of inspiration. Combine that instrumental prowess with soulful singing and stunning stepdancing, and the result is an artist who is basically a force of nature.
Grammy and IBMA award-winning mandolinist, singer, and recording artist Mike Compton has earned "a worldwide reputation as one of the modern masters of bluegrass mandolin...one of the most recognizable and respected mandolin voices anywhere" (Mandolin Magazine). He toured with John Hartford, Nashville Bluegrass Band, and was featured in the soundtracks for, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "Cold Mountain". Wearing his signature pressed b
