WHEN: Sunday, December 15, 2019 at 4:00 PM WHERE: The Jones House - 604 West King St. Boone, NC COST: Tickets are $20 and may be purchased in advance by calling 828-268-6280 or emailing brandon.holder@townofboone.net Alexa Rose's music is poignant and timely; her voice is tender and ethereal. Rose's pure voice, along with intricate melodies, string accompaniment, and an effortless delivery all play a part in creating an enjoyable experience for her audience. It is Rose's adept lyricism, however, that truly allows her to craft an emotionally stirring performance. Rose is establishing herself as one of Americana's greatest contemporary storytellers with her heartfelt and honest lyrics, which tackle the big issues of life and love. These themes are elucidated in songs like "Borrow Your Heart" and "The Leaving Kind," along with her new album's title track, "Medicine for Living." Ultimately, the listener is taken on an emotional, but cathartic, journey that discovers beauty in the midst of despair, and healing in the midst of brokenness. While bringing a fresh Memphis sound to her songs, Rose continues to remain true to her rural Appalachian roots. In her single "Like A Child," Rose portentously declares, "Someday it's gonna be my turn." For Alexa Rose, that day is today, as she is making her mark on the music industry.

John went on the road as a pro at 16 with the group Chanting House which he formed with Susan McKeown and which eventually included such great players as Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, & Donogh Hennessy. John went on to form the highly acclaimed super group, Solas, with Seamus Egan, John Williams, Karan Casey and Winifred Horan, which took the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm, in no small part due to John’s powerhouse rhythmic guitar style and innovative arrangements. As a member of Solas, John performed to sold out audiences nationally and internationally as well as appearing on many national TV and radio programs: NBC’s The Today Show, various programs for National Public Radio and Public Radio International, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, E-Town and World Cafe as part of that critically acclaimed group, he also received three NAIRD awards and a Grammy nomination for the band’s self-titled first recording. After leaving Solas, John has gone on to perform and tour with other greats in the Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass worlds – as music director for folk icon Joan Baez, guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien (John was included on Tim’s 2006 Grammy-award winning CD, Fiddler’s Green), Linda Thompson, Kate Rusby, Cathie Ryan, Cherish the Ladies, and many others. He has appeared on soundtracks for the feature film, The Brothers McMullan, Soldier, PBS’s Out of Ireland and also composed the music for the film Uncle Robert’s Footsteps and the play Down the Flats as well as performing on countless recordings as guitarist and/or singer for other notable artists such as Kate Rusby, Linda Thom

Journalists flocked to the region to extract sympathetic profiles of families devastated by poverty, abandoned by establishment politics, and eager to consume cheap campaign promises. What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America's recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The book analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The book offers a must-needed insider's perspective on the region. (148 pages) Buy from Foggy Pine Books - https://www.foggypinebooks.com/store/p1714/9780998904146.html#/

As one of the world’s most popular herbal remedies, ginseng is revered in China, where its roots have been consumed for its purported immune-system enhancing and energy-boosting qualities for millenia. While large scale plantations of shade-cultivated ginseng are grown in Wisconsin and Ontario for export to Asia, the cryptic, shade-loving plant grows naturally in the rich mountain forests of western North Carolina. Each fall, locals hit the woods in search of the plant to dig its unique root, which can fetch up to $1,000 per pound. Overharvest and poaching are now threatening this native plant and the traditions that many in the region hold dear. In his presentation, “Roots in Appalachia”, Dr. Jim Hamilton will discuss the significance of ginseng to western North Carolina, its role in local and global markets, and other cultural nuances of ‘seng.
