With inspiring vocal harmonies and virtuoso instrumentals, The Gathering breathes new life into traditional Christmas music and introduces fresh new songs of the season.
"It's what the holidays were before shopping and Irving Berlin." Wall Street Journal
About the band:
Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing, Joe Newberry is also a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter. A longtime and frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, he sang with the 2016 Transatlantic Sessions, and at the Transatlantic Session's debut at Merlefest in 2017. The Gibson Brothers' version of his song "Singing As We Rise" won the 2012 IBMA "Gospel Recorded Performance" Award, and he shared the 2013 IBMA "Song of the Year" Award for "They Called It Music" with Eric Gibson.
While April Verch is perhaps best known for playing fiddle styles from her native Ottawa Valley, Canada, her performances extend into old-time American, classic country, Scandinavian styles and beyond, for a well-rounded tour-de-force of traditional sounds. While her fiddle playing is of the "astounding" variety, it's her multiple artistic talents that allow her to come at her audiences from so many different directions and points of inspiration. Combine that instrumental prowess with soulful singing and stunning stepdancing, and the result is an artist who is basically a force of nature.
Grammy and IBMA award-winning mandolinist, singer, and recording artist Mike Compton has earned "a worldwide reputation as one of the modern masters of bluegrass mandolin...one of the most recognizable and respected mandolin voices anywhere" (Mandolin Magazine). He toured with John Hartford, Nashville Bluegrass Band, and was featured in the soundtracks for, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "Cold Mountain". Wearing his signature pressed b

WHEN: Sunday, December 15, 2019 at 4:00 PM
WHERE: The Jones House - 604 West King St. Boone, NC
COST: Tickets are $20 and may be purchased in advance by calling 828-268-6280 or emailing brandon.holder@townofboone.net
Alexa Rose's music is poignant and timely; her voice is tender and ethereal. Rose's pure voice, along with intricate melodies, string accompaniment, and an effortless delivery all play a part in creating an enjoyable experience for her audience. It is Rose's adept lyricism, however, that truly allows her to craft an emotionally stirring performance.
Rose is establishing herself as one of Americana's greatest contemporary storytellers with her heartfelt and honest lyrics, which tackle the big issues of life and love. These themes are elucidated in songs like "Borrow Your Heart" and "The Leaving Kind," along with her new album's title track, "Medicine for Living." Ultimately, the listener is taken on an emotional, but cathartic, journey that discovers beauty in the midst of despair, and healing in the midst of brokenness.
While bringing a fresh Memphis sound to her songs, Rose continues to remain true to her rural Appalachian roots. In her single "Like A Child," Rose portentously declares, "Someday it's gonna be my turn." For Alexa Rose, that day is today, as she is making her mark on the music industry.

Journalists flocked to the region to extract sympathetic profiles of families devastated by poverty, abandoned by establishment politics, and eager to consume cheap campaign promises. What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America's recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The book analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The book offers a must-needed insider's perspective on the region.

As one of the world’s most popular herbal remedies, ginseng is revered in China, where its roots have been consumed for its purported immune-system enhancing and energy-boosting qualities for millenia. While large scale plantations of shade-cultivated ginseng are grown in Wisconsin and Ontario for export to Asia, the cryptic, shade-loving plant grows naturally in the rich mountain forests of western North Carolina. Each fall, locals hit the woods in search of the plant to dig its unique root, which can fetch up to $1,000 per pound. Overharvest and poaching are now threatening this native plant and the traditions that many in the region hold dear. In his presentation, “Roots in Appalachiaâ€, Dr. Jim Hamilton will discuss the significance of ginseng to western North Carolina, its role in local and global markets, and other cultural nuances of ‘seng.
