Directed by the the Barriuso brothers, the two sons of the film’s real world protagonist, A Translator tells the true story of a Russian Literature professor at the University of Havana who is ordered to work as a translator for the child victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster when they are sent to Cuba for medical treatment in the late 1980s. Torn from the abstract world of academia and forced into the relentlessly real world of medicine, the college professor must find a way to connect with the kids and serve as an empathic translator between the doctors and the children’s parents. Just as he adapts to his new job, the Berlin Wall falls and Cuba enters the deepest economic crisis the island has ever known. Malin is now so entrenched in the lives of the Chernobyl Children that he doesn’t notice his own young family is suffering. He must find his way back to his wife and child through the lessons he learns at the hospital and become a better person on the way.
“[A] tenderly told drama; one that wears its heart on its sleeves, and…resonates with genuine emotion." -Screen International
“Santoro’s extraordinary portrayal of Malin’s vulnerability, frustration, and empathy draws viewers in. We sympathize with him despite his familial transgressions. Each Russian child’s plight is captivating and harrowing. The Barriuso brothers succeed in creating a film that is equally heartbreaking and inspiring.†-Film Threat

Never Look Away is an epic historical drama which follows thirty years in the life of German artist, Kurt Barnert - loosely based on the real life story of Gerhard Richter, one of the twentieth century’s most admired visual artists. Spanning three decades of German history, the film explores Kurt’s quest for individual artistic freedom. As a child, Kurt is forced to stifle his creativity to adhere to rigid Nazi ideology which views art as nothing more than a vessel to propagate its ideology. His art education in the communistic, Russian controlled regime of the GDR adheres to the same repressive dogma. As a young art student, Kurt falls in love with fellow student, Ellie Seeband. Ellie’s father, Professor Seeband, a famous doctor, is dismayed at his daughter’s choice of boyfriend, and vows to destroy the relationship. What neither of them knows is that their lives are already connected through a terrible crime Dr. Seeband committed decades ago.
“The title of Never Look Away is deliciously ironic: This is one of the most mesmerizing, compulsively watchable films in theaters right now. Written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck — best known for his masterful 2006 drama The Lives of Others — this meditation on art, memory and meaning is yet another deep-dive into the postwar psyche of the filmmaker’s native Germany. " -Washington Post
“Never Look Away is wrapped up in touching performances, beautiful cinematography, and an incredibly faithful timepiece that reminds us to never look away because 'everything that's true is beautiful’.†-Daze
"Never Look Away is an epic, intergenerational tale of art, love, tragedy and politics.†-Variety

Yet “rakish†itself also suggests something strikingly unconventional in its appearance, and Maura and Conor knowingly embrace this wealth of connotation in their music, drawing on the music they grew up with and performing it with their own slant. In a performance that is something more akin to concert music, Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for chamber music and jazz. Maura Shawn, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition, wields the technical range of an accomplished classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. Conor, a native to the Irish music communities of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD, makes his home in Boston playing guitar for a number of traditional music acts and bands. As a duo they have performed on Front Row Boston, Brian O’Donovan’s Burren Backroom Series, and they can be heard on broadcasts of WGBH’s “A Celtic Sojourn.â€
