The twice-national studio musician of the year, David Johnson – who will serve as host for the evening – is the front man for Bluegrass Boys. Folks who know Johnson can attest to his being one of the most entertaining emcees anywhere. His running commentary about the members of the two bands and the history of the music is worth the price of admission in itself! Trombone player Harold McKinney, a retired ASU faculty member from the Hayes School of Music, directs the King Street Brass band. This concert has special meaning for McKinney, as he was a member of the United States Air Force’s Brass Band during his four years of military service. The usual suspects will again be joining McKinney. Trombone player, Joe Brown will come down from Ohio. Trumpeters Bill Jones and Patrick Whitehead will arrive from the DC area. Chris Watson will be this year’s tuba player. Jones’ son, Gabe, will be joining in on drums. This show will be an evening of excellent renditions of songs popular in both musical genres as each group is given the chance to play some standards from their respective music styles, but what makes the concert special is when they combine their efforts. Joe Shannon once described the concert this way – “When they team-up, it’s magic, kind of like Dixieland, but it’s Bluegrass Dixieland with an Appalachian heart.” Past audiences can attest to the fact that this concert is just plain fun and nothing is more uplifting that hearing the Grass and Brass play the service anthems in their Armed Forces Salute, as JSMHM honors those who have served or are serving our country. This year’s selections will again include songs such the Stars and Stripes Forever, The Bugle Call Rag and many other favorites from past shows. Sutton added, “The JSMHM Blue Gras

In Lebanese with English subtitles Capernaum is an award-winning film which explores the life of Zain, a streetwise, good-natured boy of about twelve years of age, who deftly negotiates the crowded streets and desperate poverty of modern Lebanon. Living in the unforgiving slums of Beirut with his uneducated parents and a wild pack of younger brothers and sisters, Zain is forced to become the family’s primary breadwinner and problem solver. When he fails to prevent his parents from marrying off his beloved, younger sister, Sahar, to a man nearly three times her age, he runs away from his negligent parents and finds himself navigating a world where cruelty and poverty threaten to overwhelm kindness and goodness. Directed by Nadine Labacki, the film has received critical acclaim, earning a New York Times’ Critic Pick designation, and the Prix de La Citoyennete at the Cannes Film Festival, a jury prize for outstanding social responsibility. “Tackling its issues with heart and intelligence, Labaki's child-endangerment tale is a splendid addition to the ranks of great guttersnipe dramas. . . Labaki does a superb job capturing the cacophony of the streets through a mixture of nervous camera movements, shrewd editing, and a multitude of sounds. . . Al Reefa is a revelation.” -Variety “Nadine Labaki’s hectic and heartbreaking new film borrows its name from an ancient city condemned to hell. . .modern Beirut as captured by Ms. Labaki’s camera is a teeming vision of the inferno, a place without peace, mercy or order. Its crowded streets and makeshift dwellings hold endless desperation, but the movie is too busy, too angry, too absorbing, and too exciting, you might say — to succumb to despair. The sources of its remarkable energy are Ms. Labaki’s curiosity and the charisma of her young star, Zain al Rafeea, who plays a b

A seventh-generation ballad singer, storyteller, and claw-hammer banjo player, Sheila Kay Adams was born and raised in the Sodom Laurel community of Madison County, North Carolina. She is a North Carolina and National Heritage award winner, raised in an area renowned for its unbroken tradition of unaccompanied singing of traditional southern Appalachian ballads that dates back to the early Scots/Irish and English Settlers in the mid-17th century. She learned to sing from her great-aunt Dellie Chandler Norton and other notable singers in the community. She taught in North Carolina public schools for seventeen years before turning to full-time music and storytelling. https://www.sheilakayadams.com Bethel native and Haywood County, N.C. resident, Travis Stuart is a banjo player who has been performing old time music rooted in Western North Carolina for over twenty years. The backbone of bluegrass, old time string band music carries a legacy that is inescapable, and from his earliest days growing up, Stuart was steeped in that legacy. Brought up in a rich musical community and family, Stuart learned to play banjo from local musicians like Avery County’s Red Wilson. Playing his great-uncle Austin Stanley’s banjo, Stuart has mastered a local old time style and shared it around the United States and Europe, touring and recording alongside his twin brother, Trevor, who passed away in 2016. https://www.blueridgeheritage.com/artist/trevor-and-travis-stuart/ Rodney Sutton is the director and host for Mountain Home Music. He is the former director of the Green Grass Cloggers and co-founder of the dance troupe, the Fiddle Puppets, now known as Footworks. Rodney is a master at flatfooting which is the original clogging style of the southern Appalachians. H

The musical, written by Janet Barton Speer, with songs and lyrics by John Thomas Oaks and Tommy Oaks, tells the story of Presbyterian minister, the Rev. With remarkable purpose, Tufts founded a number of institutions that continue to serve today: the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church, Lees-McRae College, Cannon Memorial Hospital, and Grandfather Home for Children.   In addition to the show this summer, the Town of Banner Elk and the institutions he founded will celebrate his life in a variety of ways. The show will premiere July 11 with additional performances July 12, 13, and 16 at 7 p.m. and afternoon shows July 14, 16, and 17 at 2 p.m.   What did Banner Elk, North Carolina, look like in the 1890s? With the vision of a young seminary student, one tiny town gained a church, a college, an orphanage, and a hospital. The musical, written by Janet Barton Speer, with songs and lyrics by John Thomas Oaks and Tommy Oaks, tells the story of Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Edgar Tufts.   Tufts first came to the region as a seminary student to organize a church, but his love and admiration for the mountain people called him back to an extraordinary life of service that forever changed the complexion of the area.
