The festival, in partnership with the Hayes School of Music, proudly presents the ninth season of the highly acclaimed Rosen-Schaffel Competition for Young & Emerging Artists, known for the pivotal role it has played in launching the careers of some of our state’s most promising young artists. During the spring of 2019, contestants submitted recordings of their work and a panel of judges selected eight finalists to compete in a public performance. During the final round on July 6, jurors will designate three top prizewinners and the audience will select an audience choice award winner. In addition to a cash prize, the first-prize winner will be awarded an opportunity to perform a complete concerto or comparable work with conductor Gerard Schwarz and the Eastern Festival Orchestra during the 2020 season of An Appalachian Summer Festival. Morgan Short, first place prize winner of the 2018 Rosen-Schaffel Competition, will perform with the Eastern Festival Orchestra on Sunday, July 14 at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s competition jurors are José-Louis Novo with the Eastern Festival Orchestra and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Roger Kalia with the Pacific Symphony and Orchestra Santa Monica, and Robert Moody with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.
