On two days in June, the Orchard at Altapass will host Cherokee artisans Mike Crowe and Ramona Lossie as they demonstrate their craft and share their rich cultural heritage with the public. Both events, in collaboration with the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, Blue Ridge Traveler, Museum of the Cherokee Indian, the McDowell Tourism Authority, and the National Forest Service, will offer visitors an opportunity to experience the culture of the Cherokee, native to western North Carolina, through song, dance, storytelling, and crafts. On Thursday, Mike Crowe and the Cherokee Dancers will bring traditional song, dance, and stories of their living history, culture, and language. Admission is $10 at the door. On Friday, Crowe returns with a flint knapping demonstration and well-known basketmaker, Ramona Lossie, creates river cane vessels. Both will speak to the diversity and vibrance of Cherokee heritage through stories. This midday event is free.
