During the economic recession of Dublin, Ireland in 1985, teenager Conor Lawlor is forced to adjust to a new inner-city public school, Synge Street, where the kids are tough and the teachers even tougher. His one glimmer of hope is the lovely Raphina, a sophisticated, neighborhood girl, advanced well beyond her years. To impress the girl of his dreams, Conor starts his own rock band with a group of nerds and non-musicians.
