New River Blues Festival at River House Inn: Sunday, September 4th!

HIGH IN NORTH CAROLINA’S BEAUTIFUL BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS on the banks of the pristine New River, there is a day devoted to WORLD-CLASS BLUES.

The setting is wonderfully scenic. Picture a glorious mountain meadow on the edge of a lively river… Now picture a beautiful summer day and hundreds of blues fans dancing in the green grass to the music of living legends. You have just conjured up the NEW RIVER BLUES FESTIVAL now in it’s 9TH year. On SUNDAY SEPT. 4, 2011 THE NEW RIVER BLUES FESTIVAL promises to out-do its past success.

The NEW RIVER BLUES FESTIVAL is unique in this Appalachian setting where Bluegrass and Old Time Music reign. The driving forces behind this one-of-a-kind musical gathering are Rob “Hound Dog” Baskerville and Penny “Queen Bee” Zamagni of the internationally acclaimed blues band, The King Bees. Residing in Todd (a nearby village on the New River where the first few fests were held) Baskerville and Zamagni were eager to bring their over 24 years of experience backing up blues greats here and abroad to this unique setting.

Calling upon friendships established through the years with some of the most revered names in blues, The King Bees have offered talent line-ups that rival many major blues festivals in the US and Europe. Fans have loved not only the performances, but also the picturesque surroundings on the banks of the New River a few miles north of Boone.

K.D. Lang Performs July 15th!

July 15, 2011

K.D. Lang & the Siss Boom Bang!

“…the best singer of her generation” – Tony Bennett

Grammy Award-winner k.d. lang‘s breathtaking voice had the power to strike at our deepest emotions for over 25 years. The smooth sound of country-rock matched with her edgy style captured the country’s attention, and it wasn’t long before her 1988 album Shadowland was in the Top 10 on the Billboard Country album charts. In 1989 she took home her first Grammy: Best Female Country Vocal Performance for Absolute Torch and Twang, and from that point forward she was no stranger to success. With the 1992, platinum-selling Ingenue she had fashioned a sound—if not a genre—all her own: an elegant and impassioned adult contemporary approach.

Her biggest hit, Constant Craving, was a product of that album and awarded lang another Grammy, this time for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. lang has collaborated, in the studio and on stage, with many pop and country greats, including Bonnie Raitt, Elton John and Tony Bennett, with whom she recorded the 2002 Wonderful World duets album. lang released her latest album, Sing it Loud, in April of this year with her band The Siss Boom Bang. This collection of songs includes lead single I Confess and a striking version of the Talking Heads’ Heaven.

It’s a Mystery!

Mystery HillEach year, for over 50 years, guests come from all over the world and the United States to visit Mystery Hill. They are all compelled to come for various reasons; “My mother came here as a child,” “I remember coming here with my Grandfather,” “I drove by this place and just had to come and see what the mystery really was,” “I just can’t get this place out of my mind.” No matter what the reason, they come back time and time again, bringing relatives and friends to experience the mystery of our “crooked house.” People do remember the remarkable defiance of gravity, where you can see a ball roll uphill, and where folks are pulled from an upright position to an uncanny standing angle of nearly 45°. This strange phenomenon has been amusing and puzzling visitors to Mystery Hill for generations. Since there is a variety of things to see and do, no one leaves disappointed. Mystery is a family oriented “edutainment” center that offers fun for children ages 2 to 102. We welcome you to join us at any time of the year.
